America's Got Talent Season 5: Semifinals Part 1
Airdate: Tuesday, August 24, 2010 [9-11pm]
  1. Anna and Patryk [Ballroom Dancers]: I don't think there is anything new to say about this act because they are two of the best this year. And like Piers said, the best dancers on the show right now.
  2. Christina & Ali [Singers; performed "When You Believe"]: In the quarterfinals, I was disappointed by their performance, but still glad they made it through (because it's hard not to root for them). This time was not their best either. There were definitely some great moments. But there were times that their voices were not perfect together, and during one of the younger one's solo parts, her voice was shaky. So it's hard to tell what their chances are at this point in the show.
  3. Antonio Restivo [Illusionist]: He should not have advanced to this round and this illusion proved why. I was bored from start to finish. When he went into that box/coffin (or whatever it was), we waited for the longest time to see him appear on the stairs that it was so obvious that during that long time he left the box. When you are going to disappear from a box, it needs to happen pretty fast to maintain the illusion or else it's obvious it's fake.
  4. Future Funk [5-year-old dancers]: Out of every act, it is Future Funk that was most undeserving of getting this far. You need to forget their young age and how adorable they are, because this is a talent show. And when it comes to talent, they are mediocre at best. The dance moves were so simple that the whole performance was pointless.
  5. Taylor Mathews [Singer; performed "Show Me What I'm Looking For"]: This is the third act in a row that shouldn't be here. There was nothing in this performance that screamed "million dollar act." It was just very neutral with some weak vocals at times and no standout moments.
  6. Connor Doran [Kite Flyer]: For the first time, I was not that impressed with his performance, because it felt like we have seen it from him before. And I agree with Piers that when it comes to his act, song choice is critical with him, because it fits the inspirational song he usually chooses. But it just didn't fit right with Owl City's "Fireflies."
  7. Dan Sperry [Magician]: Last time, people either loved him or hated him, and I knew that this time would be make-it or break-it for him. And unfortunately, it was a pointless trick. He took too long to get to the climactic finish. And once it was over, I thought "Did he even do a trick?" But Piers mentioned that the object he held to the camera at one point was supposed to be part of Nick Cannon's arm. But it says something if I couldn't even distinguish that.
  8. Kristina Young [Singer; performed Lady Gaga's "Poker Face"]: During the YouTube show, song choice almost got her sent home. And once again, she chose completely the wrong song. If you are going to choose a Lady Gaga song, you have to be great, because both Lady Gaga and "Poker Face" are brilliant. At times, her voice was shaky and pitchy. I don't know what she thought she was going to accomplish with that song. It kind of stunned me at first that all three judges X'd her, when they let some pretty stupid acts (Doogie Horner, etc) get their entire time.
  9. ArcAttack [Electricity Band]: After seeing them for a second time now, it doesn't feel new and fresh anymore. I saw this already, with their previous performance. And I didn't get the point of the lady in the cage that was writhing as if she was being electrocuted; it's obvious she's not (And when the judges were talking, that lady moved around, still acting like she was electrocuted. It was so stupid). And I take issue with that fact that they have to have a custom build stage/studio in order to perform. They shouldn't get preferential treatment. If they can't perform within the confines of the regular AGT stage/studio, then they shouldn't be here at all.
  10. Michael Grimm [Singer; performed "You Can Leave Your Hat On"]: Based on his quarterfinal performance, he had the best voice in the competition (until Jackie Evancho hit the stage, that is). And even though, this time, he was ill, had to go to the doctor, and had less time to rehearse, he did a great job. Even though the song wasn't one that would warrant a complete winning performance, he came out, gave it his all, and showed why he does have one of the best voices in the competition this year.
  11. AscenDance [Wall-climbing Dancers]: Like Connor's act, song choice is important here, because it sets the mood for the movements. But I was bored this time. With the right song and movements, it can be beautiful, moving and inspirational, but I didn't see or feel that this time. Because it was the wrong song, their movements felt disjointed, and because of that, I didn't see anything exciting, unfortunately.
  12. Prince Poppycock [Opera Singer; performed Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"]: I love that he chose "Bohemian Rhapsody," because it is a great song but not one we would expect from him. At times, the song did limit him from really belting out, but he made up for it with the theatrics and personality. After some really dud acts tonight, we ended the night on a high.
Favorite Performances: Anna and Patryk / Prince Poppycock / Michael Grimm

My Votes: Anna and Patryk [10 votes by phone] / Prince Poppycock [10 votes online]

Predictions to Advance: Anna and Patryk / Christina & Ali / ArcAttack / Michael Grimm / Prince Poppycock

My Season 5 Vote Tracker:
Fighting Gravity: 20 votes
Harmonica Pierre: 20 votes [Eliminated]
Jackie Evancho: 20 votes
Anna and Patryk: 20 votes
Prince Poppycock: 20 votes
Michael Grimm: 10 votes
Alice Tan Ridley: 10 votes
Murray: 10 votes
Michael Grasso: 10 votes
Total: 140 votes cast so far

There are only two acts that are guaranteed to advance to the Top 10, based on the audience/judges reactions and the online reactions: Michael Grasso and Prince Poppycock. I also am predicting Anna and Patryk because they were great as usual, but performing first may hurt their chances. I also believe ArcAttack will advance as well, since everyone seems to love them (myself not included). But the final spot is a little tricky here. It could be any number of acts: Christian & Ali, Antonio Restivo, Future Funk, Connor Doran, or AscenDance. Even though I am ultimately going with Christina & Ali, I have absolutely no idea who out of that group might make it, so it seems to be a toss-up. Since there are five spots open this week for the Top 10 instead of the usual four, it makes it a little harder, since there were many weak acts this week.

Tonight, five of this week's semifinal acts will advance into the Top 10. And the guest stars for this week's results show will be Late Night host and 2010 Emmy Awards host Jimmy Fallon, former AGT act Recycled Percussion, and singer Kylie Minogue. See ya then...

  • My Predictions: I got three out of four correct.
America's Got Talent Season 5: Wildcard Show
Airdate: Tuesday, August 17, 2010 [9-11pm]
  1. Kruti Dance Academy [Bollywood Dancers; chosen by Piers]: When it comes to dancers on this show, I have always favored the Bollywood dancers, and Kruti Dance Academy proved why. Their choreography, music and costumes are on a higher level than regular dancers this show has had. I don't know what the other acts are going to be like, but Kruti may have a good shot.
  2. Rudy Macaggi [Danger Act; chosen by Sharon]: If I recall correctly, he spent most of his previous performance talking and showing no content until the final few seconds. And the same thing happened this time (so boring). The danger act this time was stupid and didn't seem that dangerous compared to the blade of death he did before. He's gone for sure.
  3. CJ Dippa [Child rapper; chosen by Howie]: He was rightly eliminated in the quarterfinals, and should not have been brought back. The song was terrible, and his dance moves were nothing extraordinary. When the judges were commenting, it looked like he was getting emotional; I believe he was faking it to get the sympathy vote (that's the sort of thing he would do).
  4. RNG [Young female dancers; chosen by Sharon]: They were terrible last time; not just with the moves, but with the cheesy story as well. They did step it up somewhat since when, such as getting rid of the story and adding the attitude, but they're still not that great. So far, Kruti is the act to beat.
  5. Harmonica Pierre [Harmonica player; performed Lady Gaga's "Alejandro," chosen by Piers]: On the night of his quarterfinal performance, he was the only act that was perfect from start to finish, and was wrongly eliminated. I love that he chooses current songs that everybody knows, tonight being Lady Gaga's "Alejandro." There were times that he was great on the song, and a few cheesy moments when he wasn't playing and decided to sway his hands. So while overall I would give him a B+ or A- (as opposed to an A last time), he is still better than all but one act so far tonight.
  6. Michael Grasso [Magician; chosen by Sharon]: The judges wrongly cut him back in Vegas, and he proved tonight why they should have kept him in. I loved his sleight of hand magic in Vegas, and he has impressed me as well this time with a stage illusion. He's the best so far tonight.
  7. The Hot Shot Tap Dancers [Tap Dancers; chosen by Howie]: There was nothing special about their tap dancing. If you listened to the sounds of their tapping, you could tell they were not always in sync with each other. And at times, it seemed like they weren't really trying all that hard.
  8. Doogie Horner [Comedian; chosen by Piers]: Something weird just happened: I actually laughed a few times (but only slightly). But even so, he still bombed during the other 95% of the time. So, at this point, I have no idea what to make of his chances.
  9. Connor Doran [Kite Flyer; chosen by Howie]: I was surprised the judges cut him in Vegas, because they always fall for the stories (people's backgrounds). There is just something about what he does that hooks you in and be enchanted by the kite movements. I believe the viewers and voters are and will be behind him, and he has a good shot at advancing.
  10. Anna and Patryk [12-year-old ballroom dancers; chosen by Piers]: They are another act that was wrongly eliminated. They are one of the best acts this year. They were brilliant ballroom dancers, not just for their age, but for any age. They better get through this time, or I will wonder if the rest of America was watching the same show as I was.
  11. Michael Lipari & Ashleigh Dejon [Acrobats; chosen by Sharon]: This acrobatic pair were brilliant. The various moves they did up in the air on that rope were extremely impressive. Now, while there was a moment where I along with the judges and the audience thought Ashleigh had actually fallen (though only for a moment, because if it was real, they would have had people out there so fast on her, and would have cut to commercial), it was obvious they did that to put the attention on them. But no matter, they were excellent, nonetheless.
  12. Swing Shift Side Show [Danger Act; chosen by Howie]: Oh, come on! Why, oh, why did Howie bring them back? That was a waste of a spot. Not much happened: there was a couple blow darts shot out and a few swords swallowed. Whoopee! Nobody cares about this act, and that will be proven on Wednesday night.
Favorite Performances: Michael Grasso / Anna and Patryk

My Votes: Michael Grasso [10 votes by phone] / Anna and Patryk [10 votes online]

Predictions to Advance: Michael Grasso / Connor Doran / Anna and Patryk / Michael Lipari & Ashleigh Dejon

My Season 5 Vote Tracker:
Fighting Gravity: 20 votes
Harmonica Pierre: 20 votes [eliminated in quarterfinals]
Jackie Evancho: 20 votes
Michael Grimm: 10 votes
Alice Tan Ridley: 10 votes
Prince Poppycock: 10 votes
Murray: 10 votes
Michael Grasso: 10 votes
Anna and Patryk: 10 votes
Total: 120 votes cast so far

Even though Piers made the best selections (for the most part) over the other two judges, it seemed like the producers were cohorts in their decisions so that each judge could have at least one of their chosen acts advance.

Initially, I would have chosen Kruti Dance Academy to make it through, but after seeing the rest of the show, I had to unfortunately cut them from my predictions, since they performed first and may get lost in the shuffle. But you never know; anything can happen. Michael Grasso was the first act of the night to guarantee himself a spot in the semifinals. The only other act that I believe is guaranteed a spot if Michael Lipari & Asheligh Dejon. And I also believe that Connor Doran and Anna & Patryk deserve the final two spots. I have not gotten all of my predictions correct in a little while now, so there will most likely be at least one act that I just mentioned that will not make it. And if that happens, the only other act I could see taking a spot is Kruti Dance Academy, but knowing this show, it will be Doogie Horner. I have a bad feeling that if Doogie is one of the final acts that the judges have to decide on, they may choose him. But that all depends on who the other act is, though.

I am so glad that the quarterfinals are finally over, because I and everyone online have been grumbling that this show seems to just keep going on and on and on with no end in sight. So, I'm looking forward to the next round to finally start next week.

Tonight, four of these Wildcard acts will advance into the Semifinals. And we will see guest performances by country music star LeAnn Rimes, and Las Vegas magician extraordinaire (and one of my favorite magicians of all time) Criss Angel. Speaking of Criss, I'll be getting a double dose of him tonight, since right after the result show will be the next episode of his A&E show, Mindfreak, from 10-11pm. See ya then...

America's Got Talent: Season 5 - YouTube Special

Before I get to this week's YouTube Special, here's a recap of last week's results:

    • Murray - Advancing to Semifinals [Prediction: 1/1]
    • Doogie Horner - Eliminated

    • Strikers All Stars - Eliminated
    • NU Covenant - Eliminated

    • Rudi Macaggi - Eliminated
  • Judge's Choice:
    • Piers - Anna & Patryk
    • Howie - ArcAttack
    • Sharon - ArcAttack
    • ArcAttack - Advancing to Semifinals [3/4]
  • My Predictions: I got three out of four correct
America's Got Talent Season 5: YouTube Special
Airdate: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 [9-11pm]
  1. PLUtonic [A cappella Group; performed Flo Rida's "Low"]: The opening, while cheesy, was pretty solid (and they sang great). But once the "choir director" started singing (his voice was just okay) and they all went into the rap of Flo Rida's "Low," it went downhill from there while ramping up the cheese factor even more. It was fun to watch, but not good enough for the Top 24.
  2. Dylan Plummer [Jump-roper]: On the good side, he is a very talented jump-roper (I would not be able to do any of those moves). But on the bad side, this act is not right for this show; there is not enough in the performance for a Vegas show.
  3. Pup [Animal Music Act]: This may have been the worst animal act performance this show has ever seen. The dog stopped playing the accordion only a little into the song, and then just stood there for the rest of the time, leaving us to listen to the terrible voice of the owner. This was a waste of a spot.
  4. Cam Hodges [Singer/Guitarist; performed "Break Your Heart"]: Piers said it all: it wasn't perfect. I really have to echo his words here. There were some good moments, and there were some pitchy notes (especially the high notes). I do not think it was good enough for me to vote for him, but America may very well give him another shot.
  5. Ryan Rodriguez [Dancer]: About 98%-99% of the time, I am extremely harsh on the dancers, and this time is no different. His dance moves were some of the most simple, basic, and amateurish moves a dancer could ever make. He even ended with one or two somersaults. I mean, come on! Is he in elementary school?
  6. Austin Anderson [Comedian]: He was not funny at all; I did not laugh once. And the audience barely made a noise of laughter. He's confident on stage, but don't make an excuse that it was the wrong topic, as Howie, Austin & Sharon did, because a good comedian should know what works and what doesn't.
  7. Booker Forte [Dancer]: Is anyone tired of seeing dance acts on this show? Most of his moves were pointless, because, as Piers said, he only stayed in a small area on the stage. And again, I didn't see anything original.
  8. Pizza Patt [Pizza Dough Twirler]: When I found out in the intro video what his act is, I knew were were in for another bad act. Here's the deal: he's very good at twirling pizza dough, but it is not a talent in terms of what the show is looking for. He tried to up the ante by having one be lit on fire, but it didn't change my mind.
  9. Kristina Young [Singer; performed Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats"]: Seeing as how she sang a Carrie Underwood song, I'm going to have to be extra tough. It was completely the wrong song choice, because the song just swallowed her up, whereas Carrie owned the song. She was pitchy many times throughout. And at the end, I think she tried to change it up a little to make it her own, but by then it was too late for any sort of recover.
  10. Maestro Alexander Bui [Pianist]: At this point, I almost just want to give a thumbs down to every act, no matter if they are good or bad, because this has turned into a waste of an episode. But this guy is a really talented pianist and the only talented act of the night so far. My only criticism is that as the song kept going on, it sounded like the same thing over and over. So, he needs to step it up more if he makes it to the next round because it does need to be more exciting. But he definitely is really talented.
  11. Dan Sperry [Magician]: Initial Comments: This guy is kind of disturbing, from his mysterious personality to the floss through his neck. And you could tell he was not happy when the judges were focusing on and laughing at Howie being grossed out by the floss getting near him instead of actually commenting on his act. I have said before that I'm a huge fan of magic, but I don't know whether I liked it or not. It was just so strange. / Updated Comments: Even though it was a little disturbing, he is no doubt very talented and deserves to advance to the next round.
  12. Jackie Evancho [10-year-old Opera Singer]: She is by far the most talented child to come on to the stage in the history of the show, let along being the best of the night. At first, I thought they were just playing the song on the speakers and she was lip syncing, but I am just blown away that that is her voice. My jaw was on the floor from start to finish. I could keep going, but there really aren't any words to describe the brilliance we just witnessed. It's no wonder she was the YouTube winner (and won a trip to Universal Studios Orlando). I almost decided not to vote at all, but then along came Jackie.
Favorite Performance: Jackie Evancho

My Votes: Jackie Evancho [10 votes by phone; 10 votes online]

Predictions to Advance: Cam Hodges / Maestro Alexander Bui / Dan Sperry / Jackie Evancho

My Season 5 Vote Tracker:
Fighting Gravity: 20 votes
Harmonica Pierre: 20 votes [eliminated]
Jackie Evancho: 20 votes
Michael Grimm: 10 votes
Alice Tan Ridley: 10 votes
Prince Poppycock: 10 votes
Murray: 10 votes
Total: 100 votes cast so far

For the most part, this was a disaster of a show. I seriously hope the producers decide not to do a YouTube Special ever again, because most of them were terrible. Fortunately, the final three acts were great.

Before I get to my predictions, I have to make this comment: Before tonight, I would have said that Fighting Gravity is the odd on favorite act to win, but after hearing Jackie Evancho's voice, I think they have some competition for the crown now.

There are three acts that should and need to advance: Maestro Alexander Bui, Dan Sperry, and Jackie Evancho. If I were the sole decider, I would only put those three acts through and not even have a fourth spot. But, alas, that's not the case. So, this fourth spot is a little tricky. It could be any number of people. I could see it being Cam Hodges, Pizza Patt, or even Pup (only because Sharon and Howie were giving him a pass because the dog didn't cooperate; if they are up for the Judge's Choice, Pup may have a shot). But I'm ultimately going with Cam Hodges, because after the three good acts I mentioned, he was the next act on the good to bad list; he wasn't anywhere near perfect, but the judges like him, and he did have some good moments.

Tonight, four of these YouTube acts will advance into the Semifinals. And we will see guest performances by YouTube sensations Judson Laipply ("Evolution of Dance") and Lin Yu Chun (Taiwan's "Super Star Avenue"), as well as former AGT act Quick Change. See ya then...

    • South Philly Vikings - Eliminated
    • CJ Dipper - Eliminated

    • Studio One Young Beast Society - Advancing to Semifinals [2/2]
    • Chipps Cooney - Eliminated
    • Polina Volchek - Eliminated

    • Debra Romer - Advancing to Semifinals [2/3]
    • The Strange Familiar - Eliminated
    • Luigi - Eliminated

    • Harmonica Pierre - Eliminated
  • Judge's Choice:
    • Sharon - Jeremy
    • Piers - Jeremy

    • My Predictions: I got three out of four correct.
America's Got Talent Season 5: Top 48 (Group 4)
Airdate: Tuesday, August 3, 2010 [9-11pm]
  1. Da Maniacs [Dancers]: This was a pointless dance act, because the dance moves were so basic and generic. As much as I would say it's great to see real people doing this as opposed to stick figures, I don't need to see their stomachs movin' all around.
  2. NU Covenant [Gospel Singing Group; performed OneRepublic's "Apologize"]: I didn't really like the lead singer's voice from the start and was hoping the harmony would be better, but, alas, that was not the case. Their voices were flat throughout.
  3. Anna & Patryk [12-year-old Ballroom Dancers]: Finally, an act worth watching. Their ballroom dancing was exceptional. My only critique is that the background people acting as diner patrons were distracting from the main act.
  4. Lindsey Stirling [Violinist]: And now we're back to the bad ones. She is not a good violinist at all; for most of the song it sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard. And why did she have that dorky (literally) costume)?
  5. Doogie Horner ["Comedian"]: No...Just no. I did not laugh once. And the dancers at the end with the pig masks were just pain creepy and disturbing.
  6. Rudi Macaggi [Danger Act]: That was just too disturbing to see his head come that close to the saw blade. He may advance because of that, but it took way too long to set it up to that climax; because of that, I wouldn't advance him, but he may have a shot.
  7. Taylor Matthews [Singer]: I didn't find anything particularly original or unique with this performance. And there were many moments where his voice was shaky. But based on the audience reaction, he may advance.
  8. Mary Ellen ["Singer"]: It is times like this when I just want to slap the judges up their heads for even putting her through the initial audition, let alone to this round. She can't sing. She can't play the piano. It sounded like she didn't know the words a couple of times. And she obviously doesn't look in a mirror when she does her hair or makeup. This is worse than Chipps Cooney.
  9. Arcatack [Electricity Band; performed Ozzy Osbourne's "Iron Man"?]: I didn't get the point of this band the first time I saw them and I feel the same this time. They are a band, and if they need electricity volts to make it exciting, then that's not good. When it comes down to it, they are a band, and the song was so simple and not grand. And they have the right materials on which means they were safe, so I don't see anything worthwhile.
  10. Prince Poppycock [Opera Singer]: I have been a huge fan of his from the start. His voice is so unbelievably brilliant. Normally, I would say costumes and such would be distracting, but with him it works. The only thing I found odd was the juggling near the end for a couple seconds. And I loved that, in the intro video, we finally got to see what he really looks like.
  11. Murray [Magician]: The format of the illusion is one we see all the time, but I am amazed and curious as to how the tiger got in the cage. And this is coming from a lover of magic.
  12. Strikers All Stars [Dancers]: I was not that impressed. They only had one cool move (that was like the wave). We had a great group last week in Studio One Young Beast Society, and this group has nothing on them.
Favorite Performances: Prince Poppycock / Murray / Anna & Patryk

My Votes: Prince Poppycock [10 votes by phone] / Murray [10 votes online]

Predictions to Advance: Anna & Patryk / Arcatack / Prince Poppycock / Murray

My Season 5 Vote Tracker:
Fighting Gravity: 20 votes
Harmonica Pierre: 20 votes [eliminated last week]
Michael Grimm: 10 votes
Alice Tan Ridley: 10 votes
Prince Poppycock: 10 votes
Murray: 10 votes
Total: 80 votes cast so far

I believe it seems crystal clear which four acts should advance: the four I mentioned above. Anna & Patryk were perfect (and we don't have an act like it this year). Arcatack's act was so extravagant, even going so far as to have to perform it outside, that they are a shoe-in to advance. Prince Poppycock is an obvious pick as well. And Murray better stay in; I say that because the voters of this show haven't always been receptive to magicians in previous seasons. But he is one of the best this show has seen, and deserves to stay in. I believe those are the only four that deserve to advance; there are a couple other acts that may have a shot when you go by the audience reactions (Rudi Macaggi, Taylor Matthews), but just as long as Marry Ellen is eliminated, I will be happy.

Tonight, four more acts will advance into the semifinals. And we will see guest performances by Taio Cruz, and Bret Michaels (can't wait to see Bret perform!). See ya then...

America's Got Talent Season 5: Top 48 (Group 3)
Airdate: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 [9-11pm]
  1. The South Philly Vikings [Dancers]: This is just another generic dance group with no standout moments. It seems like they have these elaborate costumes to mask that obvious fact.
  2. CJ Dippa [12 year old rapper]: Once again, he's cocky and has such a huge ego, and if you have that at such a young age, I hate to see what he's going to be like as an adult. The song was stupid, and it's obvious that he's in it for the fame and fortune and not for the craft.
  3. Harmonica Pierre [Harmonica player; performed Train's "Hey Soul Sister"]: Even though he won't win, he is excellent at what he does. And doing a modern song put such a unique twist on it (and a risk that worked). He definitely deserves to stay in the competition for now.
  4. Polina Volchek [Gymnast]: I would have buzzed her like Piers did, because there wasn't much gymnastics, just moving her body in some fluid motions around on the stage, with a rope.
  5. The Strange Familiar [Band (Female lead); performed "Time After Time"]: I agree with Sharon that it was the wrong song choice, because it didn't fit this band. And the female lead was pitchy many times throughout. I didn't like her voice in the auditions, and she didn't deliver this time either.
  6. Haspop [Dancer]: He is no doubt very talented, but I do have some criticisms: while most of it was great, there were a couple moments where he went into cheesy dance moves that took away from how great he really is. And the songs changed so many times that it seemed a little disjointed. But like I said, he is very talented (one of the best tonight), and deserves to move on.
  7. Luigi [Singer; performed "This Love"]: Right from the first note, I wasn't impressed. His voice is very weak, and the song showed that.
  8. Chipps Cooney ["Magician"]: He should not have gotten past the first round, because it's just so pointless and he's wasting airtime. Just when I didn't think it could get any worse, he does by spending most of the time doing a strip tease that had nothing to do with magic.
  9. Kaya and Sadie [Belly Dancers]: This act cannot sustain an hour-long show, because the belly dancing is just on a loop with nothing new. (On a side note, Kaya has the scariest smile).
  10. Jeremy VanSchoonhoven [Bike Tricks]: As someone who doesn't really like this kind of act, I have to say I really enjoyed it. He added a lot of danger to it, which made it exciting.
  11. Debra Romer [Singer]: In previous rounds, the focus was on her nerves. With that out of the way, the focus can be back on her voice. The honest truth is that she has a weak voice. While it's hard to dislike her and I do see potential in her, I can't get over the fact that she has a limited range.
  12. Studio One Young Beast Society [Dance Group]: At this point, I want to say that I'm getting bored by just about every dance group. But I have to say that this group has changed my mind for once. At first, I thought they would be just another dance group, but they did do some impressive moves, which, combined with the pimp spot, will earn them a spot in the next round.
Favorite Performances: Harmonica Pierre

My Votes: Harmonica Pierre [10 votes by phone; 10 votes online]

Predictions to Advance: Harmonica Pierre / Haspop / Jeremy VanSchoonhoven / Studio One Young Beast Society

My Season 5 Vote Tracker:
Fighting Gravity: 20 votes
Harmonica Pierre: 20 votes
Michael Grimm: 10 votes
Alice Tan Ridley: 10 votes
Total: 60 votes cast so far

I almost did not vote for anyone, because I don't see anyone in this third group that has the potential to win. But I ended up voting for Harmonica Pierre only because I felt he was the only one that was perfect and didn't have anything going against him in my eyes. So I believe he will definitely be advancing. I've said many times before that I don't usually enjoy dance acts, but Haspop and Studio One Young Beast Society were two of the best acts this week, and they both should be in the Semifinals. The last spot could be one of two people: either Jeremy VanSchoonhoven or Debra Romer. I ultimately am predicting Jeremy, mainly because I didn't really find anything wrong with his performance, while I found things to criticize about Debra's performance. But I think there are many voters who are on Debra's side and will vote for her. With her nerves out of the way, many voters may vote for her because she is breaking out of her shell. But if this is the case, it shows that people don't always vote based on actual talent. So, it could really go either way with these two.

Tonight, four more acts will advance into the next round. And we will see guest performances by the Jabbawockeez (I read online that they had auditioned for AGT one year and didn't make it), and Mike Posner. See ya then...

  • I got all four of my predictions correct!
America's Got Talent Season 5: Top 48 (Group 2)
Airdate: Tuesday, July 20, 2010 [9-11pm]
  1. Cheer SF [Cheerleading]: Even though I love Adam Lambert's "For Your Entertainment," the song they cheered to, the song and their moves didn't mesh; they were slow and boring. I didn't see anything that I haven't seen from a school cheerleading group; nothing extraordinary. And I saw someone stumble at one point. Plus, I agree with Piers that cheerleading isn't a talent in the sense of what the show is looking for.
  2. Alice Tan Ridley [Singer; performed "Midnight Train To Georgia"]: She has such an unbelievable voice, with a lot of soul and depth to it, and I love when she goes into that gravel. I have heard this song a lot on American Idol, but I love listening to her singing it.
  3. Mona Sampath Dance Company [Bollywood Dancers]: I was a supporter of another Bollywood dance act a year or two ago, so I'm excited to see another one. While they didn't necessarily blow me away, they are still great at what they do, and I would love to see them come back, but with only four advancing, who knows?
  4. Iron Horse [Band (with tricks/stunts); performed "American Saturday Night"]: They said they do tricks/stunts during their act, but where was it? They did some hokey things that I think was done to cover up the fact that the lead singer is terrible; both of these factors should lead to a justified elimination.
  5. The Strong Man [Strength Act]: I said this last week: you shouldn't revolve your talent around a story (in this case, parking in L.A.). Because of that, he spent most of the time talking (telling the story), and very little time actually doing the stunts. Plus, it was obvious they put those women on stage on purpose; it didn't act anything to the act.
  6. Ronith [Impersonator]: This bozo shouldn't have gotten past the first round, because all his impressions are all exactly the same. He is so delusional because he thinks he's going to be famous. And after he got a second buzz (first by Piers, then by Sharon), he didn't know what to do and stumbled.
  7. Hannibal Means [Opera Singer; performed "Circle of Life"]: He may not be a bad singer, per se, but what turns me off is the way he presents himself with the stupid hats and such. It was so cheesy, and the dancers with the hats added to that too.
  8. Wreckless [Dancers]: They weren't bad dancers by any means, and the costumes were interesting to look at, but I didn't see anything unique and original.
  9. Lil Chris [Singer (12 years old); performed "Closer"]: At 12, he is not ready yet. His voice was not always in tune (especially the final note). He was very uncomfortable doing the dancing. And it was just not the right song for him; his voice is not mature enough yet for that type of an R&B song.
  10. AscenDance [Rock Climbing Dancers]: The song really meshed well with their movements to create such a beautiful performance. I could say this isn't a talent because it's rock climbing, but it's all in the way they present it with the dancing.
  11. Antonio Restivo [Fire/magic Act]: What was that? Was it just a fire act, or a magic act as well? There was only one puny trick. Most of the time was spent either standing, walking around, or sitting, and he wasn't the one really dealing with the fire himself.
  12. Michael Grimm [Singer; performed "Tired of Being Alone"]: I don't think I was expecting all that much from him (based on his initial audition), but he came out and blew me away. He has a unique voice (similar to Michael Johns from American Idol), and I hope he comes back, because I want to hear that voice again.
Favorite Performances: Alice Tan Ridley / Michael Grimm

My Votes: Michael Grimm [10 votes by phone] / Alice Tan Ridley [10 votes online]

Predictions to Advance: Alice Tan Ridley / Mona Sampath Dance Company / AscenDance / Michael Grimm

My Season 5 Vote Tracker:
Fighting Gravity: 20 votes
Michael Grimm: 10 votes
Alice Tan Ridley: 10 votes
Total: 40 votes cast so far

It's a given that both Alice Tan Ridley and Michael Grimm are a lock for the Semifinals, for sure. AscenDance has a really great shot at advancing as well, because their performance was so moving to the audience and with the lead woman crying, they will definitely be still in. The last spot could be a few possibilities. It could be Ronith, though I will be ripping my hair out if America or the judges advance him. The dancing act, Wreckless, is a contender as well, but I just don't think they stood out enough. And for no other reason than he performed second to last, Antonio Restivo may have a shot as well. But I'm going with Mona Sampath Dance Company, because of all the dance acts, they are the only one I would want to see again, and because they are Bollywood dancers, that gives them something unique to stand on.

Tonight, four more advance into the Semifinals. Plus, there will be guest performances by Cirque du Soleil and the band Train. See ya then...

America's Got Talent: Season 5 - Top 48 (Group 1)

[WEBMASTER NOTE: In an episode of the T.W.O. Show, I had said that I wasn't sure if I was going to blog about Last Comic Standing or America's Got Talent this summer. I have decided that I will do so for AGT (in the same form that I do with the Idol-Talk segment), but most likely not for LCS, just because it is hard to comment on each comedian's bits without sounding so redundant (hilarious, sorta funny, kinda funny, not funny at all, etc). For LCS, I may just insert my comments into the podcast show.]

America's Got Talent Season 5: Top 48 (Group 1)
Airdate: Tuesday, July 13, 2010 [9-11pm]

  1. Kung Fu Heroes [Martial Artists]: I have never liked seeing martial arts on this show, because it isn't a talent so much as a hobby or sport, so there's no point in having them on the show.
  2. Christina & Ali [Young female singers; performed Rascal Flatts' "Bless the Broken Road"]: They were one of my favorites coming into the Top 48. And I have always thought the younger one had the better voice, but I was disappointed by her tonight; the older one was. But the harmony of them together was beautiful.
  3. Airpocalypse [Air Guitarists]: This is one of the acts that should not have made it past the first round. There is no point to it, and like Sharon said, it's not to be taken seriously. There is no doubt that they're good at what they do, but if they're not going to play instruments, I'm not interested. Plus, the dancers they had on stage were distracting from their main act (maybe they did that on purpose).
  4. The Hot Shot Tap Dancers [Tap Dancers]: On the bad side, I didn't understand the story they revolved the tapping around. And I wonder if anybody will remember this later. But on the good side, they are amazing tap dancers. And I loved the slides across the stage.
  5. Paul Safy Jr. [Singer; performed "Cry Me A River"]: He's a great singer, no doubt, but he may suffer from the forgetability factor (I don't think he was featured in earlier rounds). And I agree with the judges about the cheese factor; there were a lot of over-the-top moments, especially the end with the mike going from one hand to the other and such to match the last note.
  6. Future Funk [Dancers (5 & 10 years old)]: While the judges were ogling over them because of the adorability factor, they decided to overlook the fact that they were not in sync with each other many times, and it started off bad with the wardrobe malfunction of trying to rip off their sleeves. If this act had featured dancers older than them doing that same off dance, the judges would have ripped them apart.
  7. Sally Cohn [Hand Whistler; performed Mariah Carey's "Hero"]: It was fun to see her the first time, but it's not a talent with a high enough caliber to be in the Top 48 or beyond. Tonight, she was off from the music backtrack, and very out of tune. It's time to say goodbye.
  8. Nick Pike [Variety act (danger, fire)]: In the words of Joy Behar's SNL impersonator, "So what, who cares?" He was trying to do too much, while not really doing anything at all (a fault of the transitions, or lack of). And when Howie asked him to say what it is he does (in other words, put a label on it), he couldn't even answer. [In his opening video package, it was mentioned that he was cut in the previous round but called back. I must have missed if he they said if someone was disqualified to warrant this.]
  9. RNG [Dancers (11 year old girls)]: Why do these acts have to revolve their act around a story? It only detracts from the talent. There were only a couple good moves; the rest was the same old-same old we see all the time. There was nothing extraordinary to see here.
  10. Maricar [Painter]: In earlier rounds, I've thought that she's very impressive, but didn't need the revealing outfits, because it's just unnecessary. Here, she's doing the art under water. I'm not sure if there was a mistake at the start when she held up a piece against the glass and it fell off. And for most of it, it was kind of boring. I think because she was underwater, it limited her movements and such. But at least I could tell that she painted Piers (unlike Piers himself).
  11. Fighting Gravity [Variety (Blacklight Act)]: This was my absolute favorite act from the auditions, and they didn't disappointed tonight. They just scream Vegas. I have never seen anything like this talent ever, and I can seem them performing in Vegas alongside the Blue Man Group and Cirque Du Soleil, as Sharon mentioned. If I had to pick a winner now, I'd say Fighting Gravity.
  12. Nathaniel Kenyon [Singer (YA or teen); performed "Lips of An Angel"]: Even though he has a throat infection, I have to judge this based on what he presented onstage. You could tell in his voice that he was off, by quite a bit. And while he did perform last (the pimp spot), I wouldn't put him through. It's hard, though, because he's very likable.
Favorite Performance: Fighting Gravity

My Votes: Fighting Gravity [10 votes by phone; 10 votes online]

Predictions to Advance: Christina & Ali / Future Funk / Fighting Gravity / Nathaniel Kenyon

My Season 5 Vote Tracker:
Fighting Gravity: 20 votes
Total: 20 votes cast so far

When I was deliberating on which four acts should advance, I immediately chose Fighting Gravity because, let's face it, they're the best we may have seen so far and the odds on favorite to win in my eyes. Next, I chose Future Funk, only because of the adorability factor that I mentioned above. I personally would not send them through, because they were not that good this week. Even though Christina & Ali were not as good as they have been in the past, I predict they will go through based on their story and the fact that their harmonies together were excellent. My only worry is that they performed near the start of the show, which could hurt their chances. If they are eliminated, I will be feeling guilty for ultimately deciding not to split my votes and send half their way. The final spot was a little tougher to decide. I initially went with Airpocalypse only because the judges and the audience seemed to love their "performance." To me, personally, it's a pointless act, but they do have a shot at advancing. But I ultimately went with Nathaniel Kenyon. I think he has two things going for him that may offset the fact that he was not good. The first is the pimp spot of performing last and being freshest in everybody's mind. And the second is the sympathy vote being thrown his way due to his illness. But ultimately, I think the only act that is guaranteed a spot in the Top 24 is Fighting Gravity, with Future Funk being a very, very safe bet as well.

Tonight, four of the preceding acts will advance into the Top 24. I'm not understand this; if 12 perform each week, that calls for 4 weeks of the Top 48. And if only 4 from each are advancing, that only leaves 16 acts in the Top 24. Are they doing a Wild Card episode and/or is this when the YouTube auditions come into play?

Anyway...also tonight there will be guest performances by Selena Gomez & the Scene (I better get the remote ready to hit the mute button), and the cast of Broadway's "Rock of Ages" (which includes American Idol's own Constantine Maroulis!) will perform during tonight's hour-long results show from 9-10pm on NBC. See ya then...
